Parent Information

At Alawa, we believe the parent's role in a child's education is crucial. We welcome any efforts from parents to communicate and get in touch with the school so that we can work together to maximise your child's development at school and beyond.

We have a range of handbooks available, and over time we will be developing our policies which will be endorsed by the School Council. The Parent Prospectus has been prepared by our school as an introduction and to provide information on the operation of Alawa Primary School. The School operates under the auspices of the School Council, established under the Education Act as the governing body of the School.

Aims

Defence School Mentor Program

Alawa offers a Defence School Mentor (DSM) Program which provides support to children of Australian Defence Force (ADF) members and their families. The program is funded by the Department of Defence through the Defence Members and Family Support (DMFS).

The role of the DSM is to support Defence students and their families to become an integrated member of the school community. A key purpose of the role is to assist in the smooth transition of Defence students from school to school and across different State and Territory education systems. The DSM aims to be a positive role model and support person for the students during their time at Alawa. The DSM raises awareness of the unique needs of Defence families, due to their military lifestyle. They assist to develop and deliver programs and activities for students as well as networking to source necessary resources/programs for families.

The current DSM at Alawa Primary School is Laura Thiele. Due to her own personal experience, Laura has the understanding and empathy for the challenges Defence families can face. She is at Alawa on Wednesdays and Fridays each week. On these days, Laura spends time supporting students in the classrooms, and on the playground at breaktimes. She is available if parents would like to call or email to discuss any concerns that they have for their child/ren.  The DSM relays information, services and events of interest to Defence families in the newsletter each fortnight and via email.

Defence Kids Club operates on a Wednesday lunchtime. Defence children are encouraged to attend and participate in the activity. They are welcome to bring a buddy along. This buddy system promotes the development of friendships in a supportive environment.

Upon enrolment, please let the school know that you are a Defence family and if your child/ren has any special requirements. This way the DSM can be available to assist your child/ren’s transition to their new school.

Playgroup

Alawa Playgroup aims to strengthen relationships within our Alawa community and provide support to families throughout the year.

Our playgroup program is based on the Early Years Learning Framework and caters for families with children from 0-4 years. We support parents/carers to become actively engaged with their children in activities as well as make connections with other families. Throughout the year we connect families with Alawa Primary School staff, facilities and programs to ensure the transition from playgroup to preschool is a positive one.

Alawa Playgroup runs every Friday morning in the preschool room throughout the school term between the hours of 9:30-11:30am. Each session cost $4.00 and that covers tea, coffee and a biscuit for parents and consumables. Our playgroup coordinator is Aleesha Rutledge.
